Award in Management – ILM Level 5

ILM is a trade mark of the City and Guilds of London Institute and is used under licence.
If you have already experienced the roles and responsibilities of middle management, this course will give you the opportunity to improve your skills in team leadership and show you ways to encourage your people meet the challenges of innovation and change.
To complete this award successfully, you complete a workbook to help you apply your new skills back at work. You will also be required to write a 2,000 word work-based assignment.
The programme consists of six one-day workshops across a period of six weeks plus one further half-day.
Day 1 – The Role of a Manager
This workshop helps put your vital role in the context of the organisation as a whole. You will cover the following topics:
- An introduction to the Institute of Leadership and Management
- The nature and purpose of organisations
- Stakeholders in an organisation and their requirements
- The different levels of management, their roles and responsibilities within an business
- The profile and job functions of the middle manager
- Authority, power, responsibility and accountability
- Different types of management found in the public, private and voluntary sectors
Day 2 – Communicating Effectively
Communicating effectively is vital skill for any manager. This workshop will concentrate on:
- Communications, climate and culture in the workplace
- Using feedback skills to improve communication and workplace relationships
- Knowledge management and sharing information to improve outcomes
- Your own personal style and approach including image, presentation, non-verbal behaviour and social skills
- Respect in the workplace and the balance between trust and control
Day 3 – Leading Teams for High Performance
Managers have to be able to lead others effectively. This workshop will deal with:
- Planning, organising, motivating and controlling teams
- The differences between management and leadership
- The range of management styles and different circumstances in which they are useful
- Team development and team roles for building a balanced team
- The relationship between team and individual performance
- Evaluating team performance
Day 4 – Motivating and Empowering your Team
Inspirational leadership doesn’t just happen, it can be learned. This workshop will help you:
- Delegate and empower
- Influence people’s behaviour and motivation at work
- Encourage risk-taking
- Learn from failures
- Assess the performance of your staff and use coaching to improve performance
- Promote feedback, recognition and reward techniques to support, motivate and monitor your team’s performance
Day 5 – Leading Innovation
Creative organisations exploit their ideas fully. This workshop will show you:
- How to manage creativity and innovation
- The benefits of SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technology, Environmental, and Legal) analyses to assess the needs of the organisation
- Concepts of creativity and innovation and how to help them flourish
- How to judge the feasibility and validity of new opportunities
Day 6 – Managing Change Effectively
Do you see change as an opportunity or a threat? This workshop will explore:
- Why change is an important facet of business success
- Styles of leadership which promote change
- Using communication to overcome barriers
- How to plan for change
- The difference between Kaizen (continuous change) and Breakthrough Change
- Techniques for use in continuous improvement
- How to monitor and evaluate the outcomes of change
Day 7 – Final Half-Day Session
- The final ½ day (morning) workshop will help you plan your work-based assignment
About this workshop
- These workshops will involve you in a mixture of interactive exercises and discussion. There will be opportunities to practise your new skills through role playing exercises in a supportive atmosphere.
- Our trainers are experts in their topic and deliver courses in a practical, interactive style
- The maximum number of people on a training course is 12 so that the trainer can accommodate the learning needs of each delegate
- A two course buffet lunch and unlimited tea and coffee are included in the price
Timing
Six one day courses and one half day course taken over seven weeks, the first day starts at 8.30 a.m. and finishes at 4 p.m, all the other days start at 9.30 a.m. and end at 4.30 p.m. with half an hour for lunch. The final half day starts at 9.30 a.m. and concludes at 12 noon.

If your business is located in the West of Scotland you may be eligible for a grant of up to 50% of the cost of participating in these courses. There are a number of places available which are reserved for businesses with less than 250 employees and companies must meet certain eligibility criteria.
