Award in First Line Management – ILM Level 3

Would you like to be better at managing people? Are you a confident decision-maker? Is your team as motivated as it could be?

Today’s managers are under increasing pressure to become more efficient and effective in a competitive market place. Developed and accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), our Award in First Line Management Level 3 is an introduction to the skills needed by anyone who is required to supervise or manage staff.

Through a mixture of group workshops and individual exercises held over four days in four weeks, you will gain a practical understanding of the principles of effective leadership and management.

To gain the Level 3 award, you will be invited to submit workbooks and complete a 1,000 word work-based assignment.

Day 1 - An Introduction to Management and Leadership
During the first of four workshops, you will:

  • Gain an introduction to the Institute of Leadership and Management
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the first line manager
  • Distinguish between management and leadership
  • Explore and discuss different styles of leadership
  • Appreciate the importance of effective communication skills
  • Understand the importance of leadership in managing change

Day 2: Getting the Best from your Team
The second workshop concentrates on the team dynamic. You will learn how to:

  • Balance the team, the task and the individual
  • Build and maintain trust
  • Understand the difference between a group and a team
  • Support your team through periods of change
  • Strengthen your role as a team manager

Day 3: Motivation
Everyone likes to feel motivated to succeed. But do you have the qualities needed to motivate others? During this workshop you will explore the range of factors that motivate people at work and you will learn how to:

  • Assess the potential of team members
  • Evaluate their performance
  • Delegate
  • Give and receive feedback

Day 4: Problem-solving and Decision-making
Managers have to be decisive. This final workshop highlights a variety of methods that will help you make and implement the right decisions. It will also reinforce your awareness of:

  • Your role as supervisor or manager in the decision-making process
  • The information you will need in order to identify solutions to a problem
  • Decision-making techniques
  • The benefits of planning
  • Methods to evaluate outcomes

About these workshops
  • The workshops will involve you in a mixture of interactive exercises and discussion. There will be opportunities to practise your new skills through role playing exercises in a supportive atmosphere.
  • Our trainers are experts in their topic and deliver courses in a practical, interactive style
  • The maximum number of people on a training course is 12 so that the trainer can accommodate the learning needs of each delegate
  • A two course buffet lunch and unlimited tea and coffee are included in the price

Timing
Four one day courses taken over four weeks, the first day starts at 8.30 a.m. and finishes at 4 p.m, all the other days start at 9.30 a.m. and end at 4.30 p.m. with half an hour for lunch.

Is this the right course for me?
Yes, if you have limited experience in supervising or managing staff. If you have no experience, you might find our Introduction to Management useful. If you are a practising or aspiring middle manager, then you may prefer to look at ILM Level 5.

About the Facilitator

Ray StevensonRay is an accomplished trainer specialising in management development and has more than eighteen years of experience. He attended university as a mature student to achieve an Honours degree, thereby progressing into teaching. Ray has worked for a cluster of quality dealerships such as Porsche, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz and became the Training Manager of the same Scottish quality dealership group. He has worked with a wide portfolio of clients since and has helped them become more efficient in a variety of areas including customer service, team building and problem solving.

Ray has carried out assignments in aerospace, defence, local and national government organisations, a wide variety of manufacturing and service companies and the National Health Service. He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. In addition, Ray is a qualified assessor and verifier with the Scottish Qualifications Authority and has extensive working knowledge of the ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) qualification.

Support available
If your business is located in the West of Scotland you may be eligible for a grant of up to 50% of the cost of participating in these courses. There are a number of places available which are reserved for businesses with less than 250 employees and companies must meet certain eligibility criteria.
